To become a Christian is to have a fresh start to life. It’s about being born again; you become a Christian or a child of God by believing in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and saviour. There is no other way to achieve this. You do not automatically become a Christian because you have Christian parents, John 1:12, 13.
You cannot become a Christian through any religious rites, ritual or sacrament, Roman 1:16. Even trying to do your best by living a good life won’t do. Salvation is not initially gained by works or good deeds, Ephesians 2:8, 9. It’s God’s free gift of grace through what Jesus did on the cross. Your works or good deeds follow as a result of what has happened within.
The new birth is necessary for each one of us because something is wrong with us. Only God can put this wrong right. We only have to look at how our lives and that of friends and family around us to see how we have all turned away from God, Romans 3:9-12. Without the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives we remain crooked and rebellious by nature, Ephesians 4; 18. God sent Jesus to save us from our sins and its consequences by dying for us on the cross. When God raised him from death, God made Jesus Lord and saviour for whosoever would believe in him.
Being born again is receiving a new nature and a new spiritual life. You receive the new life in your human spirit, this new life starts within you and works itself out affecting every part of your being, your soul with its mind, emotions and will, also your body, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.
In order to face God without condemnation we must repent of our sins, the word repent in the bible implies moving from one position to another, from one way of life and behaviour to another. There is a need to make a personal decision in which one recognises that God is completely right and that we are completely wrong, Roman 3:19. It’s not enough to feel sorry about your sin, rather; there is a desire to forsake sin and turn to God for his help. Repentance is an attitude of heart that should continue throughout your Christian life.
